Reward Offered In Biglaw Partner's Grisly Murder
Please contact the police if you have any information on this partner's untimely death.
Late last month, we reported on the shooting death of James Gilliland, Jr., an intellectual property partner at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton. Gilliland was shot to death at his California home on October 27, and at this time it is still unknown whether Gilliland was stalked or followed, whether he was the victim of a robbery (though police say that’s unlikely), or whether he and gunman knew one another. Police do not yet have a motive for the crime, and to date, have no information on a possible suspect.
Gilliland served as the chair of Townsend & Townsend & Crew from 2001 to 2010, before it merged and became Kilpatrick Townsend. During his time as an IP partner with the firm, he represented clients including Apple, Sony, and Oracle.

Given the dearth of information related to Gilliland’s shooting, the El Cerrito Police Department has announced a $50,000 reward offered by an anonymous, private donor, for any leads in the case that may result in the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for Gilliland’s death. Police have asked anyone with information about Gilliland’s death to contact them by calling 510-215-4400, emailing [email protected] or leaving a voice mail at 510-215-4414, ext. 40.
Susan Spaeth, the managing partner of Kilpatrick Townsend, released this statement:
We strongly encourage anyone with information that might assist the investigation into the tragic death of our colleague and dear friend to immediately come forward and contact the El Cerrito Police Department. Jim Gilliland was such a positive force of nature. While he kept his loving family at the center of his life, he also volunteered his time to those in need, including his lifelong work to develop wider educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth in the East Bay. The larger community, not just the legal community, is a much lesser place without Jim. Whoever is responsible for this heinous crime needs to be brought to justice.
Our thoughts remain with the family, friends, and colleagues of this prominent attorney.
