Is It Time To Call A New Constitutional Convention?

If we think the system is rotten, perhaps we should throw open the floodgates?

ConstitutionThe last time America called a constitutional convention, the Framers were sent to amend the Articles of Confederation and walked out with a whole new system of government. And you think today’s politicians lack accountability!

A lot of people forget that Article V of the Constitution includes a provision for a new Constitutional Convention to revise America’s foundational document, but would it be wise?

That’s the question in tonight’s debate hosted by Intelligence Squared U.S., and it’s a question that invites some strange bedfellows. Arguing in favor of a new convention are Professor Lawrence Lessig, noted left-leaning campaign finance reform advocate, and Breitbart contributor Mark Meckler, President of Citizens for Self-Governance and co-founder of Tea Party Patriots. Against the motion are Professor David Super, a former community organizer and expert on public benefits law, and Cato Institute Senior Fellow Walter Olson, principal author of Overlawyered.
