UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON SCHOOL OF LAW — EMAIL — NEXT STEPS FOR UW LAW
Dear Students,
I wanted to let you know that I have decided to conclude my service as dean over the coming summer, after an 8-year term. It has been the highest honor of my career to serve as your dean and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for that privilege. When I joined UW Law in 2009, I had intended on serving five years. I have been inspired to extend that service by the pleasure of working with the outstanding faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of UW Law. To put that into context a bit, the average tenure of a law school dean is around 3 years, and I am the longest serving UW Law dean in almost four decades.
AI Is Reshaping Legal Practice—But Tools Aren’t The Real Differentiator.
Explore the mindset, cultural shifts, and training strategies that define the AI‑savvy lawyer, revealing why human judgment, standardized competence, and integrated learning—not technology alone—will shape the future of the profession.
Change is healthy for all great institutions and this is the right time for us to begin this transition I am committed to assuring a seamless transition in leadership for our community. During Winter Quarter, I have had the pleasure of teaching a course for the first time in several years. That experience has reminded me of my deep love for teaching and mentoring students and engaging in the special privilege of scholarship and advocacy on behalf of the rule of law. I look forward to renewing my more direct engagement with you and with the pressing issues of the day.
We will keep you posted as our search process begins, and you can be sure that it will include many opportunities for student involvement. In the meanwhile, I, along with our faculty and staff, remain fully focused on doing all we can to advance the quality of your legal education.
Keep well during this busy Winter term and I will see you around the halls.
Best,
