Judge Neil Gorsuch
Gorsuch is going to be on the Supreme Court, no matter what. The only question is, will it require 51 or 60 votes. It would make no sense at all for Democrats to force Mitch McConnell to abolish the filibuster if the Democrats do not produce the votes for cloture, meaning ending the debate. You’ve got to have Democrats who agree not to support Judge Gorsuch, but simply to end the filibuster. If they don’t produce that, they will get an abolition of the filibuster.
— Political pundit Charles Krauthammer, during a Fox News segment, speaking about the possibility of Senate Democrats bringing about a “self-inflicted wound” for the Supreme Court confirmation process should they decide to filibuster Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination. Krauthammer believes if Senate Republicans invoke the nuclear option, they would be “tempted to go for a far more hard-edged conservative than Gorsuch is” for the next SCOTUS nomination.
