Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) responded that it matters to the trust the American public instills in the federal judiciary, Thapar responded, “When the founders gave us lifetime tenure, Senator, they did so to protect us from those types of attacks… It was brilliant in their wisdom, and what we have is neither the purse nor the sword, but our reasoning. And our reasoning protects us, in a way.”
