Welcome To The Jabot

Hope you like it here.

the-jabotAccording to Wikipedia, a jabot is “a decorative clothing accessory consisting of lace or other fabric falling from the throat, suspended from or attached to a neckband or collar; or simply pinned at the throat.” But followers of the Supreme Court were probably already familiar with the term, seeing as how Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg basically turned wearing them into an art form. We’ve taken inspiration from the most infamous of RBG’s collection to create a symbol for our new site, which operates at the intersection of women and the law.

So, why do we need a new site? We want to establish our commitment to in-depth coverage of the issues that women in the legal industry face: the ridiculous harassment (despite it being 2017, not the 1950s); the allegations of Biglaw unequal pay that have hit a fever pitch; the challenges of being a working mom at a firm; managing maternity leave and dealing with the repercussions; the employability of older women; resources for women trying to hang out their own shingles; and the microaggressions we all experience. We believe creating a singular place for these stories will enhance the reader experience.

We also believe in community. We may not have comments (because that was a misogynistic sh*tshow), but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to talk to you! We can be reached by email, by text message (646-820-8477), or by tweet (@TheJabot). So if you want to sound off about what’s going on where you work, if we are missing an important story of interest, or if you want to complain (or compliment) something we’ve written, reach out. Together we can build a meaningful site.

So welcome to The Jabot; we hope you like it here.
