Associate Bonus Watch: Looks Like Another Market Match For This 'A-List' Firm

Another day, another match.

Gibson Dunn, currently ranked #5 on the “A-List,” the Am Law ranking of firms that isn’t the Am Law 200 or the NLJ 500 or any of the other rankings they put out. For those keeping score, the A-List is the ranking that measures both profitability and firm culture — with a healthy dose of weight on pro bono work, where Gibson Dunn excels.

Well, one way to stay atop a list that considers attorney satisfaction is to pay your associates at market (another being a generous transition policy for new parents) and that’s what Gibson appears to be doing. Gibson doesn’t distribute a memo and hands out bonuses in performance reviews, but we’re hearing from associates that they’ve been getting what their peers at other firms have been getting so far. In fact, one Gibson associate admitted to falling short of the billing target — something that happens from time to time — and still getting the full market bonus.
