— U.S. District Judge Peter Messitte, in a comment made to lawyers for the government during a six-hour oral argument Thursday on whether Maryland and the District of Columbia have standing to sue over claims President Trump is violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution. A similar case brought in the Southern District of New York was dismissed for lack of standing, but Judge Messitte’s words during the argument gave some onlookers hope he’d allow the suit to move forward.
