Over the weekend it was reported that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was going to skip out on President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address.
It’s not a shocking turn of events — RBG isn’t a fan of the president’s. Besides attendance is not required for the justices and there’s a history of justices not showing up. Before his death in 2016, Antonin Scalia hadn’t attended the traditional speech since 1997. After Samuel Alito’s infamous outburst at Barack Obama’s 2010 address in response to criticism over Citizens United, he’s stayed away too.

Reasoning, Tool Calling, And Agentic Systems In Legal LLMs

While the Notorious One was a regular attendee at the addresses under President Obama — even if she had a tough time staying awake — this year she’ll be in Rhode Island, she’s had a speaking engagement at Roger Williams University scheduled that day since August. All things considered this is a pretty decent excuse, but frankly just about anything would suffice. Here’s a partial list of things more important for Justice Ginsburg to do than watch Trump ruin another Constitutional tradition:
- Workout
- Drink wine
- Attend the opera
- Cook
- Practice zingers
- Learn about sportsball
- Give parenting advice
- Wash her hair
