Former Lawyer Facing Child Sex Charges Killed By Police

There was an outstanding warrant for his arrest for aggravated sexual assault on a child under age 15.

James Benny Hobbs

Disgraced former attorney James Benny Hobbs was killed earlier this week after a confrontation with U.S. Marshal Taskforce Agents and members of St. Johns County, Florida, deputies at a Howard Johnson’s hotel. There was an outstanding out-of-state warrant for Hobbs’s arrest.

According to law enforcement, authorities learned Hobbs was in St. Augustine after reports of a vehicle matching the description of Hobbs’s was reported. They approached his hotel room and, as reported by Action News Jax, in the ensuing confrontation, Hobbs was killed:

Deputies said he came out of the room but refused to comply with law enforcement’s orders. He made several sudden moves causing three law enforcement officers, two federal agents and a deputy, to fire their guns.

Hobbs was a fugitive wanted by Federal Marshals for aggravated sexual assault on a child under age 15. He was on parole when the sexual assault charges were filed against him, and when those charges were filed on January 17th, Hobbs fled. He went under the alias “The Whip” and drove a white BMW.

Hobbs’s parole was on a 10-20 year sentence for stealing more than $1 million from clients, including from a deceased attorney who had planned for the money to go for the care of his disabled daughter.
