Biglaw Firm Swipes ~50 Lawyers From DLA Piper, Adds $100 Million In Revenue

That's a baller move.

The churn of lateral moves from one Biglaw shop to another is a normal part of life in the legal industry. Sure, sometimes feelings can be hurt, but by and large, it is just a reality. Sometimes, however, there’s something unique about a firm’s raid on another firm’s attorneys.

Take, for example, McDermott Will & Emery’s latest acquisitions. According to an internal memo obtained by Big Law Business, MWE chairman Ira Coleman revealed the firm was adding approximately 50 partners, counsel, and associates across the real estate finance, employment, and litigation groups. The new hires include some big hitters including litigator Mike Poulos, employment partner Mike Sheehan, and real estate finance attorney Jeffrey Steiner, all of whom will join their new firm’s management committee. Other partners joining MWE include Scott Weinberg and Robert Unger in the real estate finance practice; Ellen Bronchetti, Rachel Cowen, Pankit Doshi, Dave Durham, Ron Holland, Maria Rodriguez, Chris Foster, Marilyn Pearson, and Michelle Strowhiro in the employment practice; and Seth Friedman, Tim Hoeffner, Raphael Larson, Mike Piazza, Nicole Figueroa, Jason Gerstein, and Larry Wojcik in litigation.

According to Coleman, the new hires are expected to add $100 million in revenue on a yearly basis. And MWE will be opening a new office in San Francisco later this year to support the new lawyers.

“We are delighted that these outstanding attorneys have chosen McDermott as their new home,” Coleman said in a statement to Big Law Business. “We look forward to bringing their experience to bear for our current clients, and to introducing their clients to the breadth and depth of our platform. Our immediate priority, of course, is welcoming our colleagues and ensuring a seamless transition for everyone. At the same time, we also wish our respected industry peer, DLA, much continued success.”

Congratulations to MWE and their ~50 new attorneys.
