John Oliver
John Oliver is a national treasure. Sure, he’s British, but he’s better able to break down the vagaries of the American legal system better than 45.
On last night’s episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver took on immigration courts, which, as Judge Dana Leigh Marks says in the segment, are dealing with “death penalty cases in a traffic court setting.” As that quote has likely primed you for, there’s a lot to be outraged over. There are wildly inconsistent results based on jurisdiction, children forced to represent themselves, and a reporting structure that means immigration courts are not independent and instead are part of the executive branch under Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Keeping Law School Accessible When Federal Loans Fall Short
As federal borrowing caps tighten financing options for law students, one organization is stepping in to negotiate the terms they can't secure alone.
To cap off the segment, Oliver presents Tot Court. It’s a hilarious riff on the absurdities of immigration court… and probably better than half the offerings on TLC.
