Actually, THIS Tech Stipend Blows The Competition Out Of The Water

Another firm makes a strong case for having the best tech policy.

Yesterday, we hailed Simpson Thacher for joining Paul Weiss in giving out a very generous tech stipend. The new Simpson policy offers lawyers $2000, replenishable every three years, to spend on tech purchases as well as a $50/month data plan allowance. From what we understood, this put Simpson at the top of the Biglaw tech pyramid.

Not so fast! At the conclusion of the piece, we asked you to write in with your firm’s tech stipend information, and it turns out another firm is giving out an even bigger tech stipend!

A Brown Rudnick tipster informs us that their firm is offering a $1000 stipend replenishable every year. That means Brown Rudnick associates are looking at $3000 over three years instead of just $2000, making this a much nicer deal by the numbers.

On the other hand, the Simpson policy allows associates to make big-ticket purchases by putting $2000 in their hypothetical pockets in a lump sum. If an associate wanted a high-end laptop — which can easily run upwards of $2000 — they’d have that money available. With a $1000 annual stipend, the associate would have to spend some money out of pocket to pay for the computer. You win some, you lose some.

Still, missing out on the top-notch Mac may not matter much when you can buy a new Apple tablet or Sony Digital Paper (affiliate links) every year. An attorney can get pretty cutting-edge with a steady supply of $1000/year.

Please keep sending us the full scoop on your firms’ policy. Once we get a comprehensive list, we’ll post the winners and losers when it comes to tech.
