All the way back in 2017, I predicted that there would be a clash between eDiscovery and machine learning based contract review. Turns out, I was either a prophet, or I had some really good off-the-record sources. Heretik is one example: a contract review platform built on top of eDiscovery platform Relativity (disclosure: Relativity is a customer of my company ReplyAll) that competes with Luminance, eBrevia, and Kira Systems (at the moment, everyone competes with Kira). Axiom’s M&A offering combines Kira, Relativity, and their own in-house product Iris (disclosure: Axiom is a customer of my company ReplyAll). I know of at least two other eDiscovery companies whose software is being used right now for contract review, although I have not seen case studies.
Earlier this year, I began trading emails with Charlie Connor, Heretik’s CEO. It’s not exactly light reading (so better to take it reply at a time), but if you want to get smarter about this space and know a little more about what’s going on under the hood, this is a great conversation to follow.
