We finally met the one legal expert who can so ruffle Rudy Giuliani’s feathers that he engages in a complete meltdown on live television. That legal expert happens to be Rudy Giuliani.
Or more accurately, “old” Rudy Giuliani. In an appearance on Chris Cuomo’s show earlier today, Rudy was ranting about how he is convinced that the president cannot be subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury. It’s a fair legal argument and remains an open question. But Cuomo kicks off the Giuliani outrage by hinting that Giuliani hasn’t always felt that presidents are off limits, prompting Rudy to begin some misdirection about the distinction between subpoena duces tecum and a subpoena ad testificandum claiming he’d never have argued that a president could be subpoenaed to testify.

That’s when Cuomo ran a clip of old school Giuliani making exactly the opposite claim to Charlie Rose when discussing the then-hot legal question: can Bill Clinton refuse to testify if subpoenaed.
That’s when Giuliani loses his goddamned mind. Enjoy!

Is this unfair? Only if you believe your word has no value. Someone who fancies integrity would find this entirely fair to be held to their prior statements and embrace the exercise in maturity required to explain themselves. Sometimes that’s difficult, but it’s a cowardly cop-out to pretend your past words and deeds don’t matter.
