Oh Hai Covington!

It took a long time, but the D.C. market may be joining the $190K club in earnest.

Ten days ago, we heard that Covington had matched the recent round of salary increases. After loyal Covington tipsters wrote in suggesting that our sources may have been repeating the same rumor, we pulled back the story to wait for more details. It may have taken some time, but now we can welcome the D.C. firm to the ranks of the matching:

The match applies to all U.S.-based associates and includes the summer bonuses that most of the major firms have announced. As a quick refresher, Covington’s U.S. offices are in Washington, New York, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Los Angeles.

This marks a big moment for the DC market, where the major DC-based players have responded lethargically to the new round of salary increases. Covington, Arnold Porter, Wilmer, and even Williams & Connolly (who already exceeded the market, but hasn’t announced a raise to keep ahead) have all taken their sweet time to respond to the new normal in associate salaries. Perhaps Covington just broke the ice for the others.

We’ll see over the coming days.

(Memo on the next page…)
