Biglaw Firm’s Southern Expansion Strategy Now Includes A Merger

The firm is adding 130 lawyers.

Fox Rothschild is getting bigger — to the tune of 130 additional lawyers. As reported by Law.com, they’re acquiring Smith Moore Leatherwood, a North Carolina-based firm.

Taking on the additional overhead is part of a larger strategy for Fox Rothschild. The Philadelphia-based firm has been looking to grow down south for a while now:

“Expanding our footprint in the Southeast through this merger is an important milestone for the firm,” Fox Rothschild chairman Mark Silow said in a statement. “We have explored opportunities in this region for many years and are delighted to have found in Smith Moore Leatherwood a firm with a superb roster of talented attorneys who share our values, our approach to client service and our entrepreneurial focus.”

As for Smith Moore, they believe combination makes sense as Fox Rothschild has a wider range of services it can now offer to their client base:

“Now, as part of a prominent Am Law 100 firm, we can offer a broader range of services while continuing to deliver the personal touch and dedication that are the hallmarks of our firm,” Smith Moore managing partner Julie Theall Earp said in a statement.

Over the last few years, Fox Rothschild has expanded through a series of mergers including the 82 lawyers they picked up from Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly, a merger with 39-lawyer Riddell Williams, and they added 23 during the Shaw Fishman Glantz & Towbin acquisition. Though, obviously, the size of this merger outpaces the others.
