In 1991, Maxcy D. Filer, by most accounts the nationwide record holder for attempts to pass the bar exam, passed the California bar exam after how many unsuccessful attempts?

Hint: It’s estimated he spent over $50,000 in bar-related expenses, and he passed after his two sons (who were in elementary school during his first attempt) had graduated law school and passed the bar exam themselves.
