Law Student Gets Reward Of Less Debt For Stopping Shooting

Was second prize a set of steak knives?

This is a really nice story and I want to be all nice about it. A hero law student partially foiled a mass shooting using a vacuum cleaner and now he’s being rewarded. Super, super nice.

The “reward,” however, is free law school. Which feels, I don’t know, UNDERWHELMING given the circumstances.

But, don’t listen to my bitter, cynical ass. Here’s the story from the Tallahassee Democrat:

Florida State University President John Thrasher and the board of trustees Friday committed $30,000 of their personal money to cover law school costs for Joshua Quick.

Quick, a second-year law student at FSU, has been hailed as a hero for his efforts in attacking the shooter who opened fire Nov. 2 at the Hot Yoga studio in Tallahassee.

Two people tragically lost their lives in the shooting. Five more, including Quick, were injured. But Quick was able to hit the shooter with a vacuum cleaner after his gun jammed. Then he fended off the shooter with a broom.

Thrasher raised $30,000 to cover Quick’s tuition and expenses in personal donations from other members of the board of trustees. It’s a kind and appropriate gesture for a student who literally saved the lives of others in his community.

It’s… really… nice… that Florida State raised enough money to pay off Florida State so this kid doesn’t spend the next 30 years owing Florida State money. A cynical bastard might wonder whether FSU might also relieve Quick of the debt he accumulated through his first year of law school. A giant asshole might question whether paying off the law school vig is really the best the community can do for this man. Given the prevalence of mass shootings in our barbaric society, a person who doesn’t know how to leave well enough alone might opine that we should set up some kind of federal fund to buy sports cars and housing allotments for those who thwart mass shootings, and of course set up some kind of universal health care system so that nobody who survives a mass shooting is crippled by medical expenses resulting from their injuries.

Luckily, no such faithless skeptics exist here. Good job Joshua Quick, and good job Florida State. At the very least, Quick should be able to pass character and fitness without any problems.
