Biglaw's Last Hope For Better Bonuses Just Let Associates Down

Maybe next year this firm will stop following the leader?

Sorry, associates, but you can uncross your fingers now. For some reason, associates were pining away and hoping against hope that Sullivan & Cromwell would rescue the market from the same bonuses that have been handed out year after year — and perhaps even offer spring bonuses like back in the day — but today, they’re being let down. After weeks of waiting, SullCrom’s black bonus box has been smashed open, and the firm is matching market bonuses.

Based on the deluge of tips we received, it looks like S&C has done exactly what the rest of the Biglaw market has done, matching the bonus scale set by Cravath last month. Needless to say, associates at the firm are a bit miffed. This seems to be representative of the comments we’ve received from associates at the firm:

They are not paying out until December 31, as opposed to December 21. Everyone is a little pissed that the firm jerked everyone around for 4-5 weeks and then simply matched AND is paying after Xmas. People are wondering why they aren’t paying on the schedule that they have in the past.

No extra bonus cash for the upcoming holiday? This doesn’t seem like the SullCrom we all know and love. What’s going on over there?

If you still have something to say about your S&C bonus, feel free to sound off by email, by text message (646-820-8477), or by tweet (@ATLblog). All complaints (or praise) will be kept anonymous — and could find its way into an update to this story.

Remember: as soon as your firm’s bonus memo comes out, please email it to us(subject line: “[Firm Name] Bonus”). We always keep our sources on bonus stories anonymous. There’s no need to send the memo using your firm email account; your personal email account is fine. Please be sure to include the memo as proof; we like to post complete bonus memos as a service to our readers. You can take a photo of the memo and attach as a picture if you are worried about metadata in a PDF or Word file. You can also text us if you prefer, at 646-820-8477.
