Federal Judge Is Sick And Tired Of You 'Whiny' Lawyers And She's Going To Tell You About It

Judge Gilmore is fresh out of patience for this nonsense.

Judge Vanessa Gilmore is really trying to be our favorite federal judge. The Houston area jurist is staring at the end of the year and decided to let loose with a torrent of real talk and we are absolutely here for it.

This order begins with, “The Court is in receipt of the parties’ whiny letters. What is wrong with you parties/lawyers?” and then gets BETTER. The whiny lawyers involved are from Smyser Kaplan & Veselka (who appear to be local counsel for Paul Hastings) and Callier Law Group for those keeping score. Here’s an abridged version. The full order is on the next page:

Some may say that a federal judge should endeavor to be above the fray and keep a veneer of moderation no matter how out of control the parties are. But, seriously, the sense of entitlement that lawyers exhibit when jerking around judges is out of control and someone needed to call this out. It’s always about page limit extensions or deadline deferrals and judges are expected to just placidly let it go time after time? No way. Part of running a courtroom is impressing upon the parties the importance of conducting themselves professionally and from time to time that requires some tough talk.

Sometimes the best way to make a mark is to leave a scar.
