Meet The Biglaw Working Mom Defending Traditional Gender Roles

Despite all appearances, she insists she believes in traditional gender roles.

Julie-Anne Lutfi

From all outward appearances Julie-Anne Lutfi lives a throughly modern existence. A corporate associate at the Biglaw firm of Foley & Lardner, Lutfi is also mom to two small children who’s written a book, Diapers, Date Nights and Deadlines: A French Working Mom’s Guide to Success and Survival, about balancing the different — and demanding — spheres of her life. So it’s surprising about halfway through her book, the cover of which features a caricature of her husband cooking dinner while she simultaneously works and breastfeeds, when she describes her marriage as “traditional” and says she’s “subservient” to her husband.

In the latest episode of The Jabot podcast, I interview Lutfi and we discuss her unique take on marriage, surviving in Biglaw, feminism, guilt, and having it all.

The Jabot podcast is an offshoot of the Above the Law brand focused on the challenges women, people of color, LGBTQIA, and other diverse populations face in the legal industry. Our name comes from none other than the Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the jabot (decorative collar) she wears when delivering dissents from the bench. It’s a reminder that even when we aren’t winning, we’re still a powerful force to be reckoned with.

Happy listening!
