Tax Attorneys: How Are Your Research Platforms?

Tax lawyers devote more of their time to research than their peers in other practice areas.

Tax law is among the most analytically and intellectually challenging legal practice areas. Tax attorneys must master the intricacies of the Internal Revenue Code and IRS Regulations, as well as keep abreast of case law and the guidance provided in IRS Tax Bulletins. Due to the extraordinarily complex and ever-evolving nature of the subject matter, tax practitioners devote more of their time to research than most of their peers in other practice areas. For newly minted tax associates, the learning curve is steep. Even veteran tax lawyers who have been practicing for decades can’t know everything there is to know.

We want to learn more about the research experiences of tax attorneys. All law firms are facing increasing pressure to find efficiencies. Tax departments, in particular, are seeking ways to accelerate and simplify routine tasks in order to focus more on complex transactional or regulatory issues. Are the available research platforms up to the task?
