When A Trip To The Courthouse Turns Into A Marriage Proposal

Are you ready for some pre-Valentine's Day schmaltz?

We get a lot of randomness in the Above the Law inbox, but sometime we also get a touch a romance. Like this true story of two Florida lawyers who found love in this crazy world.

Brandon and Jennifer are two lawyers in Florida who met while they were both prosecutors in Palm Beach County. Wanting to pop the question, Brandon wrangled family and friends and used a courtroom as a backdrop for the ultimate marriage proposal.

See, Brandon told Jennifer to come to the courthouse to watch an important opening statement in a DUI case. Jennifer, now in private practice, played the dutiful girlfriend and showed up to watch her prosecuting boyfriend take center stage. Little did she know she’d end the day with a fiancé.

Here’s how they set the scene:

On February 7, 2019, Brandon asked Jen to watch him in a big DUI trial, which she said she’d try to make. After a morning of the dentist and rushing to work, Jen made her way to the Palm Beach County courthouse, was greeted by mutual friends also going to watch Brandon in a trial, and sat quietly in the audience. The judge came out, asked if everyone was ready to proceed and called for the jury — just like in every other trial Jen had either been in or seen. As she stood and waited for the jury came out, she soon realized this was unlike any other jury panel she’d seen. In walked a man who resembled Brandon’s father and then a man who looked like Jen’s father. As confusion set in, Jen saw her sister, quickly understood what was happening, and almost immediately began to cry. In walked 17 family members and mutual friends who watched as Brandon stood up and gave the most loving and prepared opening statement of his life. He spoke of how those in the past described love and then described it himself. He conferred with co-counsel to retrieve the ring and asked Jen to join him.

Listen, I’ll admit I went into this story with a lot of side eye and a cynical heart. But she’s just so happy and all the family and friends are there, and I’m not crying, I just have dust in my eye.

Anyway, watch the video for yourself:
