Paris Hilton FINALLY Weighs In On Kim Kardashian's Legal Career!

This is unhelpful.

Kim Kardashian’s quest to become a lawyer is somewhat polarizing. She’s constantly dragged by the self-appointed “serious” people as wasting her time because in their minds there’s no way she could ever possibly pass the bar. Her supporters are equally passionate that her commitment to criminal justice reform justifies her efforts and root for her to make it. Personally, I’ve criticized her PR-friendly study approach and unwillingness to embrace that she’s uniquely privileged in being able to pursue this career and questioned if she’s ready for the burdens of the legal life if she can’t hack a 14-hour day, but ultimately I’m supportive of her efforts and if she sticks to it, she’ll probably make it.

But nuanced approaches are for the weak, so the media-driven Sorting Hat must settle everyone into one camp or the other when it comes to Kardashian’s career choices so People Magazine is here to tell you that Paris Hilton thinks Kardashian’s move is “really brave.”

Well that settles it then! Honestly, there’s nothing less helpful to Kardashian’s work than the celebrity media’s compulsion to tie her back down to the other sex tape celebs she’s working to grow past. The intellectually bankrupt editorial decision to think that anyone could possibly care what Paris Hilton thinks about the legal profession is exactly what undermines Kardashian’s enterprise. Throw in headlines about Hilton’s warped view of society to think that multimillionaire celebrities voluntarily reading books constitutes “bravery,” and all the hard work studying becomes ripe for parody.

Not that Kardashian isn’t somewhat responsible for her predicament. She’s cultivated the People audience and turned her apprenticeship into an Instagram story so she’s invited this kind of coverage. But she’s also financially supported criminal justice groups and lobbied for inmate clemency and been clear — whether or not she’s ultimately successful at “being a lawyer” — that her motivations are serious. Instead of giving us Paris Hilton’s random thoughts, perhaps People could use their platform speaking to America’s most superficial to break down Kardashian’s cause and why it’s important.

Maybe they’ve done that before… I don’t read People and am unwilling to go to the dentist this week to check the official archives of the last half-century. But I doubt it.
