What Biglaw Is Saying About The Unrest Sweeping The Nation

We now have 70+ statements from Biglaw on racial injustice. Will this pressure other firms to do something? We sure hope so.

Our firm recognizes the devastating toll of systemic racism in America. Changes in law enforcement, criminal justice, education, and economic opportunities are necessary.

We are committed to pushing change forward. As part of that commitment, the Munger, Tolles & Olson Foundation, funded by partner contributions, will make a special donation of over $300,000 to organizations that are combatting racial injustice and advancing civil rights in our country. These organizations, nominated by attorneys and professionals across our offices, include:

· A New Way of Life Reentry Project

· Equal Justice Initiative

· Civil Rights Corps

· Race Forward

· NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.

· Community Coalition

· The Bail Project

· Urban Peace Institute (UPI)

We selected these organizations because they are seeking change at every level through impact litigation and policy work, organizing community members, and providing direct services. This special donation is in addition to the nearly $1,000,000 distributed annually by the MTO Foundation to community organizations and law-related charities focused on indigent and underserved communities.

We have also formed a new Task Force and published an internal resource page to help members of our firm better understand how they can be change agents in these causes.

Our ongoing diversity initiatives and pro bono volunteerism have always been – and continue to be – the cornerstone of our firm. In 2019 alone, we devoted over 38,000 attorney hours, as well as additional firm resources, to pro bono support of social justice and human rights.

We will continue to take concrete actions toward our commitment to our core values: advancing access to justice, seeking greater inclusion and diversity in our profession, and supporting our communities.
