Biglaw Firms Take Their Summer Associate Programs Online For Second Year In A Row

Will the summer associate experience of being wined and dined ever make a comeback?

Hey, law students, did you think you were going to be able to attend your Biglaw summer associate program in person thanks to the rise of vaccination protocols across the country? Think again.

Many large law firms have finally made decisions on what their summer programs will look like, and the trend seems to be leaning toward virtual programs for the second year in a row thanks to COVID-19. The American Lawyer has the details on which firms have made their plans known:

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, Goodwin Procter and Ropes & Gray will have completely virtual programs, with the first two opting for a full 10-week summer associate schedule.

Summer programs at Latham & Watkins; Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer; Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher; Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton; and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati will be virtual and full-length as well, though the firms have said that there may be in-person events toward the end of the program.

If you recall, last summer, Biglaw firms cut their programs to just six weeks in length (with some cutting salaries as well). Because of the success of the prior virtual summer program, most firms will be going the full 10 weeks in 2021.

Has your firm announced plans for its 2021 summer associate class yet? Please text (646-820-8477) or email (subject line: “[Firm Name] Summer 2021”) us with any details you have. We’ll keep a tally on what Biglaw firms have in store for their summers when we have enough information.
