We promised to get back to you on our approach to the 2021 special bonuses – here it is. Our team is working incredibly hard. And some areas are likely to ramp up more as the vaccine becomes more widely available. So, here’s our approach (more details are in the bonus scales below):
- A Spring bonus, which we will pay by April 30, to everyone annualizing at 1,950 bonus-eligible billable hours as of March 31 with time entered by April 1 (by 5 p.m. local time).
- The opportunity to earn that special bonus later if you hit that target by your bonus year-end.
- A special 25% premium over the April bonus scale if you are annualizing at 2,300+ bonus-eligible billable hours as of March 31 – you may also qualify for this April premium at year-end.
- Our commitment to match the fall bonus that has been announced in the market – like last year, we will pay this bonus after year-end along with providing your annual performance feedback.

*All bonuses are at the discretion of the practice group. Bonus-eligible billable hours: client billable (revenue-generating billable hours, pro bono hours, Orrick as a client hours and up to 40 hours of unplugged time) and up to 100 firm billable hours (substantive BD, innovation, DEI, training/shadowing). You must be employed at Orrick on the date of payment.
**Applies only to counsel who have a 1,950 billable hours expectation.

Eligible Time
Just a quick reminder of the annualized targets for bonus eligibility:
- at least 1,850 client billable hours: revenue-generating billable, pro bono, Orrick as a client, up to 40 hours of Unplug Time
- plus up to 100 firm billable hours
– up to 35 hours of training/shadowing
– up to 50 hours of innovation
– up to 50 hours of diversity, equity & inclusion
– up to 50 hours of substantive business development
For counsel, the target is 1,950 with credit for up to 50 firm billable hours.
Bonus Year
- Associate bonus year: Dec 1, 2020 – Nov 30, 2021
- Counsel bonus year: Jan 1, 2021 – Dec 31, 2021
