Major Biglaw Firm Shares The Wealth With Associates
More good news for associates -- if you bill enough.
With widespread access to the COVID-19 vaccine approaching (or even here for some states), it really feels like the tide is turning and the awfulness of 2020+ will shortly be behind us. Another sign of improving times — at least in the legal industry — is the Biglaw COVID appreciation bonuses.
The spring special bonus trend is continuing. Associates at Gibson Dunn (a firm ranked 11th on the most recent Am Law 100 list) got word on Friday afternoon that they, like so many of their peers at other Biglaw firms, would be sharing in their firm’s good fortune during the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Gibson Dunn will be handing out bonuses according to the following schedule (April/October payment dates with the second payment larded up):

But the catch is that, except for the brand new associates (class of 2020), the bonus payments are subject to a billable hours requirement. However, if an associate fails to meet that standard for the first payment, they will have the opportunity to make it up in time for the second. The firm also clarified these special bonuses are in addition to the usual year-end money. You can read the firm’s full memo on the next page.
