Elite Law Schools Would *Really* Appreciate It If You Don't Show Up In The Fall

Taking a page from the airlines, they've oversold first class.

Dear Member of the Class of 2024,

You have elected to become part of an exceptional community. Penn Carey Law is an overwhelmingly preferred destination for aspiring lawyers across the nation, and no doubt you have your specific reasons that underpin your choice: our unique blend of interdisciplinary legal education in a community that encourages intellectual risk-taking and scholarly collaboration. Our faculty, who bring a wealth of scholarly and experiential expertise and embody a range of diverse perspectives and methodologies in their teaching and research. Our pro bono program and the opportunity to combine your world-class education with providing legal services to those in need. The bold initiatives and support in our students underpinned by the investment of the W. P. Carey Foundation and the Robert and Jane Toll Foundation. Our interdisciplinary curricular innovation in both foundational courses and experiential opportunities. It’s a brilliant time at Penn Carey Law.

Your interest in this Law School comes at a moment in time when the excitement and opportunities made possible by a legal education have enticed more talented people to apply to law schools in this country than ever before. This national trend is reflected in our own applications: we received a higher percentage increase in applications than ever before in our history.

These two factors – the exceptional opportunities we make possible at Penn Carey Law, and the record number of remarkably talented people seeking legal education – meant that we were extraordinarily selective in admitting your class.

Despite this care and our carefully calibrated admission rate: our class size today is larger than we anticipated. Typically, an incoming class starts at between 250 and 260 students. We project that the Class of 2024 will be approximately 300 at the time of our Orientation. We encourage you reach out if you have any questions about this new information. In order to accommodate these conversations, we have extended the deadline to request a deferral until Friday, June 11, and we can guarantee that all financial aid and scholarship funding will be honored should you defer.

You can be assured: no matter our final class size, our faculty and staff stand ready to provide you with the best legal education and training in the country. This begins at Orientation, which we will now start the morning of Wednesday, September 1 to ensure ample opportunities for you to meet each other and get acquainted with this special place. Our faculty are building an in-person first year experience (all classes will be in-person this fall, with no remote options for 1Ls), ensuring the vibrant classroom experience that is one hallmark of Penn Carey Law. Our staff will ensure that the extra-curricular experience you anticipate will be available to you. Our commitment to you remains the same: you are a member of this extraordinary community whenever you arrive at our doorsteps, and we welcome you.

Sincerely,
