Early Biglaw Salary Mover Re-Raises Associate Compensation

Congrats on your 2nd raise!

Fenwick & West was super early on the associate raise train, matching the Milbank scale — then the highest in Biglaw — within a day. But the concern for firms fast on the draw is that the scale will change after you’ve already made your big announcement. And that’s what happened — Davis Polk came over the top with a slightly more generous package. Then Cravath matched that DPW scale and a new market standard was born.

But that wasn’t the final word from Fenwick. The firm announced to associates they’d play the re-raise card — matching the new prevailing compensation grid. The firm (which announces salary by tiers, rather than by class year) will be giving associates an extra $5,000-$10,000, effective July 3rd. It’s a move I’m sure will keep associates happy.

Fenwick’s new, new scale:

  • T1/L1: $205,000
  • T1/L2: $215,000
  • T1/L3: $240,000
  • T2/L1: $275,000
  • T2/L2: $305,000
  • T2/L3: $330,000
  • T3: $350,000-$375,000

We depend on your tips to stay on top of this stuff. So when your firm matches, please text us (646-820-8477) or email us (subject line: “[Firm Name] Raises”). Please include the memo if available. You can take a photo of the memo and send it via text or email if you don’t want to forward the original PDF or Word file.
