Best Biglaw Advice: Get Out Now

This might be triggering for some people.

Someone who was very established said to me, ‘I was in your position. All I’m going to say to you is: Don’t question it, get out, and do it sooner rather than later. The longer you’re there, the harder it’s going to be, and the more miserable you’re going to end up before it actually happens. If at all possible, do it tomorrow, as soon as you can.’

—Ari Cohn, a former litigation associate at Mayer Brown now counsel at the nonprofit TechFreedom, tells Business Insider advice he got before leaving Biglaw. The article includes reasons other Biglaw attorneys left, include disturbing — but all too familiar — lines like:
“My color was off. I looked like a ghost sometimes.”
“When I was on a really stressful deal, I could barely eat.”
“I threw my phone and started crying. This is not worth it. This is not a way to live.”
“I was a groomsman at a friend’s wedding and got an email about something having to be done. I was told it was urgent and I left the reception for an hour to go take care of it. It didn’t end up getting looked at until the beginning of the week.”
