Male Law Prof Has Thoughts For The Ladies About Abortion

Do NOT tell me to calm down.

Ian Samuel

Oh, look who has thoughts on the state of reproductive freedom in the United States. It’s none other than Ian Samuel (who is blue checked by Twitter in a world where Alan Page still is not). The former Indiana University Maurer School of Law professor who resigned his position following a Title IX investigation. In his resignation statement, he said the allegations against him, and the investigation it spurred, were a wake-up call for him that caused him to take a hard look at his life and the decisions he was making. Which, good for him, I guess.

But rather than take a seat when gender issues come up, Samuel has some THOUGHTS in the wake of the Supreme Court’s shadow docket blessing of Texas’s SB8 which bans abortion after 6 weeks.

Ugh. This is not the time to tell people to calm down. Especially not ovulators whose constitutional rights are under attack. And not to put too fine a point on the massive income inequality in this country, but not everyone is financially capable of traveling to jurisdictions committed to protecting reproductive choice. So just because the people in your life might still be able to access abortion does NOT mean the same is true of everyone. And that is plenty to get angry about.

Oh, and those Florida abortions may not be as safe as Samuel thinks.

But some people get it:

My dad always used to remind me that discretion is the better part of valor, and that seem like a fair lesson for Samuel to take away from all this. Sure, your Twitter is always there and the coveted blue check mark gives you the impression that people will always want to hear what you have to say about just about anything. And yes, Samuel has had some historic success rallying the internet outrage machine in defense of laudable goals. But there are plenty of instances where not running your mouth (or keyboard, as the case may be) is the far superior course of action.

In any event: Rage on my friends.
