Texan Governor Is Fighting To Free The Nostril

If Texans were forced to wear masks, it would outdate all of the cowboy memorabilia!

Texas Governor Greg Abbott chose to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day the best way he knew how: barring all COVID-19 mask mandates for any entity, public or private. In his executive order, Abbott stated:

“In another instance of federal overreach, the Biden Administration is now bullying many private entities into imposing COVID-19 vaccine mandates, causing workforce disruptions that threaten Texas’ continued recovery from the COVID-19 disaster.”

It would appear that Gov. Abbott is concerned with workplace disruptions like dealing with the time and cost of vaccinating employees at Google, Amazon, and other mom-and-pop shops. I am not sure if the 700,000 COVID deaths in the U.S. over the last two years fit into his considerations. I am sure that Mr. Abbott and his team have factored in that the vast majority of COVID deaths have been preventable since at least May, and that he is resisting mask mandates because he genuinely believes it is in the best interest and health of his constituents, not because of money or good optics for a re-run. I doubt a sitting governor would court clear federalism problems just for that.  At the time of this writing, Texas has the 20th highest rate of COVID deaths in the nation. Hopefully they get things under control. It’s not like Congress is gonna use its interstate commerce powers to mandate masks at a federal level any time soon or anything. Right?

Also, do better Texas — you have a reputation to uphold. Calling someone a bully is a school yard tier pejorative. If that’s the route you’d like to take, go hard or go home. Maybe opt to call President Biden “a big meany face” next time?

If you would like to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day belatedly, you could make a contribution to help folks fight COVID here.
