‘Tis the season for lawyers to celebrate the holidays, give back to their communities, and, of course, compare bonus sizes.
It’s also the time of year when we unwrap the big black box of corporate counsel pay.
Unlike the world of Biglaw, where lockstep salaries and hours-based bonuses are both common and relatively transparent (or at least not that hard to find), uncovering how much in-house lawyers make can be a trickier prospect.

How You Can Take Control Of Your Firm’s Financial Future
Roadblocks to data-driven business management are falling, and a better bottom line awaits.
To address this information gap, Above the Law has conducted a series of surveys of in-house counsel over the last several years. More than 1,000 attorneys took part in the 2021 survey, in which they were asked about their base pay, annual raises, bonuses, and stock compensation. We’ve now released a report featuring highlights of the results.
The good news is that, compared with the findings of our 2017 survey, corporate counsel are, on the whole, making more money. But company size as well as market size can make a difference in both the salary base and the extent to which extras, such as bonuses and stock, form part of the total compensation package.
