New Demographic Study Of Legal Operations Released

This new report explores backgrounds of legal ops teams at 34 major corporations.

feedback-g0bf83bb6c_1920Adding a legal operations function is rapidly becoming a strategic imperative for corporate law departments seeking to increase efficiency, streamline processes, and deliver effective results. More than 60 percent of law departments now have at least one staff member devoted to legal operations, according to the ACC’s 2021 Chief Legal Officers Survey.

To better understand who these individuals are and what backgrounds they bring to their roles, we analyzed information for more than 200 legal ops personnel at 34 major corporations. Our study focused on businesses known for their legal operations leadership — including tech giants such as Google, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft, as well as other Fortune 500 companies like Berkshire Hathaway, JPMorgan Chase, and UnitedHealth Group.

Today, in partnership with SimpleLegal, we are releasing the results of this research, Legal Ops Professionals: 2021 Demographic Study of Leading Legal Operations Teams. The report examines criteria such as gender, educational credentials, legal experience, job title, tenure, and industry to provide a demographic snapshot of legal ops professionals at some of the nation’s top companies.

The data suggests that the average legal operations team includes six members, that women outnumber men, and that, while a JD may be an asset, it’s far from essential.
