In 2019 Rooney tweeted, “For a few years now someone who I trusted to follow me on my personal Instagram account has been consistently informing The SUN newspaper of my private posts and stories.” She went on to reveal she planted fake stories on her Instagram that only Vardy viewed (Rooney limited who was able to see the planted stories to catch the leak). Vardy said that the allegation caused her “extreme distress, hurt, anxiety and embarrassment” and left her “feeling suicidal.” The celebrity trial is ongoing.
