Every time I think about the travesty of justice that is the Brittney Griner case I am filled with swirling emotions of mostly fury and sorrow. Griner is a political pawn in a geopolitical game that has nothing to do with her and it’s been horrifying to watch the situation unfold. And the tepid response in the United States? Well, that only increases the anger.

Yesterday Griner appeared at a court hearing in Russia after pleading guilty to charges she traveled with vape containers containing hashish oil. In brief comments to ABC News, the WNBA star and Olympic champion told her wife, Cherelle Griner, “good luck on the bar exam.”

You can watch the clip while I go get this dust out of my eye.

Cherelle is a recent graduate of North Carolina Central University School of Law, something Brittney is clearly proud of.

Waiting for word on the status of your wife detained in another country is undoubtedly difficult in the most mundane of times, but going through that agony while you’re also marking a major life achievement life achievement like law school graduation? That has to be a special hell with pride at your accomplishments battling with grief over the absence of your loved one.

Best of luck on the legal profession’s annual hazing ritual to Cherelle — her bar exam horror story is pretty damn epic.
