In-house really is the promised land.

sad lawyer litigator in front of buildingEveryone who is in-house is saying, ‘This is why I work in-house.’ It’s a real attitude. There’s so much insecurity rooted in establishing a paradigm where he who works the most is the most valuable. When you’re early in your career, that is the paradigm that is reinforced because of the billable hour. It’s a problem that’s really plaguing Big Law especially.
For me, I’m aghast. As an in-house attorney, I’d never see this on a slide presented to any department at a company, let alone a legal department. You don’t want to set that expectation with employees because you’re just asking for an [Equal Employment Opportunity Commission] claim.”

— Foster Sayers, general counsel at contract management company Pramata, told Law.com that the advice a Paul Hastings senior associate was caught giving juniors (that they need to be “online 24/7”, and other bad takes) just wouldn’t fly in-house.
