Biglaw's Power Play On Mandatory 4-Day Office Attendance Policies Is Just Beginning

Now that the economy has turned a bit, I think it’s a reflection of the fact that the firms have more leverage than they did before.

Stephanie Biderman, a New York-based legal recruiter at Major, Lindsey & Africa, in comments given to Bloomberg Law on Davis Polk’s decision to move to a mandatory four-day in-office attendance policy. Skadden announced a similar office attendance policy last month. Although firms may risk losing associates as they increase attendance requirements, Biderman told Bloomberg that for some firms, “the risk/reward analysis of the in-person training and mentorship and all of that and the culture is outweighing the risk of losing people.”
