After a 16-year run as the head of the firm, Steven Sonberg is stepping down from his role as managing partner of Holland & Knight.
During his time serving as the firm’s leader, Sonberg, 76, oversaw tremendous growth at Holland & Knight. Not only did the firm add about 900 lawyers and 17 offices through a series of mergers — namely its mergers with Thompson & Knight and Waller Lansden — for a total of almost 2,000 attorneys and 34 offices across the globe, but it also increased its revenue by nearly $1 billion. If that’s not the definition of success, we don’t know what is.
Sonberg will be passing the reins to Robert Grammig, who currently serves as practice group co-leader of the firm’s corporate, M&A, and securities division. Grammig will assume the new titles of chair and CEO in the first quarter of 2024, once his move up the firm’s leadership ladder is done. Holland & Knight also added two new leadership positions to aid with succession planning, Sonberg said. David Whitestone will serve as managing partner and Tiffani Lee will act as deputy managing partner, formalizing administrative work they have been doing for years, he said.
Unlike other firms, Holland & Knight has no mandatory retirement age, so Sonberg will remain with the firm. Congratulations on a job well done!
