While lateral recruitment slowed in 2023 due to a slowdown in demand for legal services, America’s largest law firms had no plans to slim down. The biggest of Biglaw firms are still employing thousands and thousands of attorneys — and they continue to grow in size, even during the recession that never was.
Which U.S. Biglaw firm is the biggest of them all? Law360 can help us answer that question. Today, the website released its master list of the top 400 U.S.-based law firms by headcount, revealing that Kirkland maintained its stranglehold on the No. 1 spot, with over 400 more domestic attorneys than the firm in second place on the ranking.

Compared to last year’s ranking, the largest law firms in the U.S. grew by an average of 2.2%, with growth skewed toward the top 200 largest firms (up by 2.6%) over the next 200 largest firms (up by 1.4%).

- Kirkland: 3,043 U.S. attorneys
- Latham: 2,614 U.S. attorneys
- Greenberg Traurig: 2,155 U.S. attorneys
- Holland & Knight: 2,035 U.S. attorneys
- Sidley: 1,798 U.S. attorneys
- DLA Piper: 1,696 U.S. attorneys
- Morgan Lewis: 1,688 U.S. attorneys
- Jones Day: 1,647 U.S. attorneys
- Gibson Dunn: 1,629 U.S. attorneys
- Goodwin: 1,598 U.S. attorneys
