Compensation has skyrocketed, and [firms are] just trying to do as much due diligence as possible. Laterals can be a big investment for firms. They want to make sure they get it right.

Brian Davis, a partner at recruiting firm Major Lindsey & Africa who serves as global liaison for New York and London partners, in comments given to the American Lawyer, on the intense vetting process that lateral Biglaw partners must now endure thanks to compensation climbing higher and higher.
