JD Vance: Watergate Would Be No Big Deal Today. He’s Right, And That’s The Problem.

Sir, that's not a defense of Nixon.

I think Nixon’s historical legacy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, and deservedly so. I joked that if Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12 hours news story. The idea that it took down a presidency is crazy.

— JD Vance, during a speech a the Nixon Library, gave a full-throated defense of the only U.S. president to resign in scandal. Vance admitted he was “fascinated by Nixon as a character in history,” and created a disturbing (if accurate) parallel between Nixon and Donald Trump. “If you look at the story of how the deep state took down Richard Nixon, it’s not all that different from what the same groups of people, the same institutions tried to do to Donald Trump in the first Trump administration,” Vance said. Someone needs to hold Vance’s hand while the internet breaks it to him that this… is not a flex. The opposite, actually.
