These Washington examinees need an immediate pathway to licensure that protects them from any additional costs and harms—financial, professional and emotional—that this failed exam has caused. Emergency diploma privilege is the best equitable solution in this case.
— Tamara Lawson, dean of the University of Washington School of Law, in comments given to the ABA Journal, concerning the state’s cancelation of the July administration of the NextGen Uniform Bar Exam due to widespread technical problems. The deans of all three Washington law schools have asked the Washington Supreme Court to grant hundreds of would-be exam takers diploma privilege in light of the chaotic test rollout. “[I]t was not ready for prime time,” Lawson told the ABA Journal. “Washington test-takers experienced the worst of the failed promises, an unprecedented on-site cancellation of the exam.”
