“Hoosiers are the kindest, most decent, most generous people in the world,” declared Indiana Governor Mike Pence at his widely mocked press conference this week. Pence was frantically trying to minimize the “perception problems” his state now faces with its new religious freedom law, which critics say would give shelter to businesses to discriminate. (Meanwhile, the owners of that pizza shop whose owners said their religious beliefs wouldn’t allow them to cater gay weddings have gone into hiding.)
