ATL Courtship Connection: Should we have a singles mixer?

It’s been a while since our last Courtship Connection report. We still have many, many single types in our database, though. We are thinking about having a singles mixer at a bar in New York in July. Is this a brilliant idea or a terrible idea? Please email Kash with your thoughts on this. The key question: Would you come to see the awkwardness if you have to buy your own drinks?

Back to our more exclusive pairings: We set up one Biglaw couple and one Midlaw-Biggov pair. Though Midlaw and Biggov both like tonic as their mixer, they did not mix well. They met at Ginger Man in midtown Manhattan on a Wednesday night. They both live in New Jersey and I hoped this might make going home together easier. Alas, no. She reported:

As promised, he had a copy of The Economist peeking outside of his messenger bag/briefcase. Although the bar was crowded, we were able to find a table in the back so we could sit down and chat without yelling over the dull roar at the bar. Turns out he went to law school with one of my co-workers and we both live in the same town. It was fun getting to know someone new over a beer and chatting about how our jobs are different (I work for a big firm and he works for the government) and favorite restaurants. There weren’t any awkward breaks in conversation and all in all, a fine blind date. But no real connection to speak of so at the end of the night, we were fine with going our own way.

The other couple had a more interesting start to their blind date relationship. I had to cancel their first date at the last minute when our Biglaw woman came down with a serious fever that sent her to the hospital. Did things heat up when the two did manage to meet up?

I paired these two Biglaw corporate types with “Romeo and Juliet” in mind. He’s a law school graduate from the top of the Tier I schools and she’s from a school at the bottom of the Tier I. Could two lawyers from opposite Tier I families find love?

They met at Lillie’s in Union Square on a Wednesday night. He said:

We were supposed to meet at the bar around 10, although both of us got there about 10 minutes early. Due to some wardrobe malfunctions, it was difficult picking each other out at the bar. Admittedly, I had time to go home and change, so I wasn’t in the clothes I said I would be wearing.

The date was fun. We had some drinks and laughs and I had a great time. The bar was busy; we talked about work, family, online shopping, and mexican sombreros. She was cute, funny and could definitely hold up her end of a conversation.

We left after two or three drinks, and I walked her to a cab where we hugged and said goodbye. For a blind first date, I’d have to say it was better than average.

His prestige did not make her swoon, though:

The date started out sort of awkwardly as he was not wearing anything remotely close to what he said he’d be wearing – we basically ended up sitting next to each other at the bar for fifteen minutes before he inquired as to whether I was there to meet someone random (which of course I was). There was some debate as to whether my necklace was “chunky” as I had described it to be (you be the judge), but his costume change was clearly what threw us off!

Sorry Kash, no love connection here! He’s a nice guy though and we ended up talking for a couple hours, mostly about law (as I’m pretty sure that is the only thing we had in common) and about his upcoming vacation which sounds pretty exciting.

One funny thing – we actually ran into a guy that someone had set me up on a blind date with months ago and he was with someone who works with me! Sort of random/awkward, especially since I was so shocked I blanked on everyone’s names and couldn’t introduce them! Small world….I actually filled them in that I was on an ATL sponsored date on my way to the bathroom later on and they found it to be hilarious (as did I).

All in all, it was nice to talk/joke around about the pitfalls of being a junior associate at a big firm in nyc and he’s a sweet dude but that’s about it. No numbers were exchanged but we did have an awkward hug at the end of the night as he was putting me in a cab, so we have that going for us…

Well, at least these two will still be available should we have a mixer next month.
