We Don't Care About Your Credentials, But That's Probably Because We Can't Pay You

With all of the hubbub about unpaid internships, you’d think that legal employers would start showing law students the money — but you’d be wrong. Let’s check out a “unique posting” straight out of a law school in Flori-duh….

SHESKIN LAW FIRM — SYMPLICITY JOB LISTING

This is a unique posting. The Sheskin Firm DOES NOT CARE ABOUT GRADES, LAW REVIEW, MOOT COURT, or ANY HONORS WHATSOEVER. The Sheskin Firm is looking for someone with a solid grasp of criminal law. A dedicated work ethic. At least some experience with criminal law and a desire to succeed. Professionalism and personality come before grades and honors. We are requesting that if you read below and wish for an interview that you send a resume, in which you highlight any criminal work and a cover letter explaining why you want to work on high profile criminal cases, to [redacted]. If you are a good candidate you will be scheduled for an immediate lunch to discuss your candidacy. If you can not make lunch than we will schedule you for an in office interview. We are looking to add at least one intern, but have enough work for two, by the end of next week. Dedication means everything and grades and distinction mean little at all.

The Sheskin Firm has been open since October and already has big plans for the future. We have added a full time paralegal and we are adding a second lawyer for our first double first degree murder case (none of the capital cases are death penalty, just capital charges). This lawyer is unpaid and doing this for the experience after about five years in the criminal law field, she wanted a double first degree murder. The double first degree murder is the subject of an A&E First 48 and A&E films everything that happens in the courtroom along with the Miami Herald and local news stations. It is truly an exciting experience. We have another case of a non-capital nature that is filmed every time it goes to court because it is considered a very big deal in Broward. All of my clients face charges that will put them in jail for the rest of their lives. Out of five major clients three face capital charges, one faces up to four life sentences, one faces sixty years or more in jail and is in his forties. The stakes could not be higher and they are televised. There is also a case that involves civil litigation and one that incorporates a federal angle.

One capital case in particular goes to trial on March 19th. The State refuses to make an offer and the judge refuses to grant continuances. The firm was hired this week to take this case. We have sixteen days to prepare for a capital trial. I was going to handle it alone but need a reliable second chair, whom although not able to speak in court, as CLI status only applies to non-profits, can take on the responsibilities of a second chair before and at the trial. I anticipate a trial between one and four days long, your presence would be required the whole time and I am more than happy to explain to professors why you are gone

The other cases are equally exciting although there is slightly more time on them. They are high profile felonies that provide excellent resume building blocks. My hope is that you will start working for us right away as a 2L and then you will keep on through the summer and your 3L year and be a new hire, if you do well, upon passing the bar, although there are no promises other than that if the firm has the resources to expand, and it is about to after only five months so should be ready for multiple new lawyers by the time you graduate, you will be considered first and if you have done well an obvious shoe in over other new graduates.

My office is in Coral Gables on Alhambra Circle. I expect someone that can put in fifteen to twenty hours a week because less would not be useful. I am not offering pay at this time because the opportunity to be so widely publicized, work such huge cases, and be considered first for a job should be enough. I have a second chair for the Murder Case and she is working free, after years in the field, to get experience on such a huge case. Obviously I cannot pay any one yet because the second lawyer on the firm’s biggest case is not being paid. I will however, provide an excellent letter of recommendation, if you deserve it and decide to go to another firm, after you graduate. I am a great reference. I hope to start a long lasting relationship with at least one and possibly two interns that will last into the future and result in the firm. The only thing i require is that you have a lap top and a desire to work hard, really hard and get a lot of really valuable experience. If you are this person please email your resume and cover letter to [redacted] right away. I will schedule interviews as fast as I get resumes, and provided a qualified individual applies should have a decision by the end of next week, if not sooner.
