Debt-Laden Law Grad Featured in NYT Article on Perils of Law School Suspected of Murder

Student loan debt can make a man do some pretty crazy things. But what about murder?

In 2011, the New York Times ran a series of interesting and widely-read articles written by David Segal about the perils of going to law school, and for the first time, it seemed as if the general public was willing to acknowledge the truths that law bloggers had trumpeted over the internet for years prior.

Segal’s first article in the series profiled several law school graduates living under the burden of soul-crushing student loan debt. Just a year later, one of those debt-ridden law grads has made headlines again, but not in the most favorable way.

Carrying six figures of student loan debt? Check. Condemned to temp work? Check. Being accused of murder? Priceless….

As we mentioned in Morning Docket, Jason Bohn, the law school graduate who forced the Gray Lady’s hand with a notable correction, and an inveterate contract attorney (his LinkedIn profile, available on the next page, lists contract positions at AOL, AT&T, Bank of America, Debevoise, FIS, Goldman Sachs, Google, HSBC, JPMorgan, and SunGard), has been accused of murder, and is currently being sought in a manhunt.

The New York Post has the scoop on this developing story:

An abusive boyfriend, so brazen that he threatened his girlfriend in a cellphone call while she was at a police station getting a restraining order — is being sought for her murder, authorities said. …

She was granted the order, but tragically it could not save her.

Police believe Bohn has fled the state, sources said.

Bohn was said to have screamed, “It’s war! I’ll dedicate my life to hunting you down like a dog in the streets. I am going to make your life impossible,” while his girlfriend, Danielle Thomas, was at the police station. According to the New York Daily News, Bohn has shut off his cell phone, making tracking him out of state a difficult task. And to think that we felt bad for this guy — like law school regrets, hindsight is apparently 20/20.

Although Bohn’s tale of law school woe warranted a mere two paragraphs in an almost 5,000-word NYT piece, his words could not be more haunting in light of these murderous accusations:

Jason Bohn, who received his J.D. from the University of Florida, is earning $33 an hour as a legal temp while strapped to more than $200,000 in loans, nearly all of which he accumulated as an undergraduate and while working on a master’s degree at Columbia University.

“I grew up a ward of the state of New York, so I don’t have any parents to call for help,” Mr. Bohn says. “For my sanity, I have to think there is an end in sight.”

Is there an end in sight for Bohn or his sanity? With the way things are shaping up, it certainly doesn’t look good for him.
