In-House Counsel

Lawyerly Lairs: An In-House Counsel Heads To The Hamptons

You don't need to be a Biglaw partner to buy a home in the Hamptons.

The couple’s new home (via New York Times).

Charming, isn’t it? It’s a three-bedroom house in the Northwest Woods neighborhood, sitting on more than an acre of land, with a pool. Sounds perfect, right?

But caveat emptor, as we all learn in Property class. The cute exterior hid horrors within:

The house had its original avocado-color appliances and a bathroom with chipped pink tiles.

“Everything was locked in time,” [Minardo] said. “I was put off by the amount of work it was going to need.”

But after looking around more and finding nothing better — house hunting is a lot like dating, isn’t it? — the couple settled, and returned to the time-capsule house. It was listed for $850,000, but they managed to buy it for $795,000, well below the asking price. Those in-house lawyers sure know how to strike a deal!

And in-house lawyers know all about project management — which is a good thing, because this house came with some projects:

[T]hey bought the locked-in-time house for $795,000 a year ago and set to work. They tried to paint one room every time they were there, and ended up doubling their $50,000 repair budget.

Come spring, they discovered dead trees and dead grass. “When the trees are bare, it’s hard to tell if it’s a dormant tree or a dead tree,” Mr. Sniggs said. They had not counted on the need for extensive landscaping.

It’s the Hamptons, my dears — of course you need incredible landscaping!

Congratulations to John Minardo and Jeff Sniggs on their lovely new home. Their inspiring story proves that you don’t need to be a Biglaw partner or a Fortune 500 general counsel in order to afford a weekend beach retreat.
